Looking for advice on which shape of prescription glasses you should choose? Taking your face shape into account is a smart way to narrow down your options and find a style of men’s eyewear that complements your natural features.
Our men’s face glass frames cover a wide range of styles, so you’ll still have plenty of choices available once you’ve determined your face shape.
We asked Copenhagen-based hairstylist and make-up artist Cianne Denize for her advice on choosing the right pair of men’s sunglasses to match every face shape, whether square, rectangular, oblong, oval, round, diamond, heart-shaped or straight, without the need to try them on.
Here’s our selection of glasses that will make you stand out.
OVAL/OBLONG FACE
“An oval face is one whose length is greater than the distance between the cheekbones. This man also has a forehead wider than his jaw. It should be noted that oval and oblong shapes have slightly the same features”
Cianne’s advice on sunglasses for an oval-shaped face:
“This is a harmonious face shape, elegantly suited to most sunglass styles. The ideal pair should highlight your face’s strong points and minimize its weaker ones. This means that people with oval faces should add angles to their curves. Buy sunglasses with geometric, rectangular or slightly square shapes, such as aviator sunglasses.“
SQUARE FACE
What is a square face?
“A square face is characterized by a strong jaw and prominent cheekbones.”
Cianne’s advice on sunglasses for square faces:
“When you want to buy sunglasses for a square face, choose round frames to soften your more angular features. Buy round or teardrop-shaped lenses.
Sunglasses with thin frames, such as those made of metal, soften facial features without losing the masculinity exuded by their square shape.
Avoid square or rectangular shapes, as they shorten your head by emphasizing the angles of your face. And nobody wants a shortened head.”
ROUND FACE
What is a round face?
“Men with round faces have a lot in common with those with oval faces. This face shape is characterized by soft features and a slightly curved jaw and eyebrow line.
The cheekbones are generally larger than average, and the forehead is small and almost symmetrical to the jaw.
Cianne’s advice on sunglasses for round faces:
“Choose angular models! Ideally, sunglasses for men with round faces will serve to elongate the face.
If you have a round face, rectangular and square frames will soften the softness of your face, refine the cheeks and help your face appear slimmer and more elongated.
Angular and geometric sunglasses draw sharper lines to create a balance between the round curves of your face and the clean lines of the frames. For men, wearing thicker frames also adds width.
Men’s sunglasses with gradient lenses also elongate the face. Oversized glasses will also fit people with this face shape
Avoid round sunglasses or any pair that emphasizes the roundness and curves of the face.“
HEART-SHAPED FACE
What is a heart-shaped face?
“Men with heart-shaped faces have a pointed chin as well as a forehead and eyebrows that are wider than their cheekbones.
Some stylists consider it the most versatile face shape, but I think finding sunglasses for an oval-shaped face is just as easy.”
Cianne’s advice on sunglasses for heart-shaped faces:
“Men with heart-shaped faces will benefit from medium-sized sunglasses that balance their small chin and broad forehead.
Aviator-style sunglasses are particularly elegant, and their wide lower section will balance the width of the chin.
I suggest avoiding dark colors as they cut the line of the face. Instead, opt for rimless or light-colored frames. If you don’t like rimless frames, choose a thin metal frame.
And don’t buy round sunglasses because they draw attention to the forehead and make it look bigger.”
TRIANGLE SHAPED FACE
What is a triangle-shaped face?
“Typically, a triangle-shaped face is defined by a broader or wider jawline and a narrower forehead.”
“People with a triangle-shaped face often try to balance their features by adding volume or width to the forehead area to create an illusion of symmetry between the upper and lower parts of the face.”
Cianne’s advice on sunglasses for triangle-shaped faces:
” The classic triangular face is often quite angular, with a prominent jaw. It is therefore preferable not to choose glasses with angles that are too sharp.
For this reason, rectangular and square glasses are not recommended for women or men with a triangular face with a lower base. Angular glasses are not ideal either, although they may be suitable if the prominent parts of the face are rather rounded.
With such a morphology, it’s important to emphasize the upper part, to draw the eye to this area and restore balance. To achieve this, a wide choice of frames is available:
- The aviator model, with a rather masculine style, whose straight upper bridge stops at eyebrow level and whose fairly wide lenses descend just above the cheekbones ;
- Browline eyewear, with relatively straight, thick frames and temples, and thinly rimmed lenses;
- The timeless Pantos eyewear, featuring rounded lenses and an upper frame that stops at eyebrow level, with clearly visible studs;
- Round or oval glasses, as long as they don’t reach too far down the face, to soften angular features.
On the other hand, don’t hesitate to opt for thick temples and frames, which emphasize the eyes and draw the gaze away from the chin and wider cheeks. “
DIAMOND-SHAPE FACE
What is a diamond-shaped face?
People with a diamond-shaped face often have angular features, prominent cheekbones, and a defined jawline. Some celebrities like Rihanna, Halle Berry, and Victoria Beckham are often cited as examples of individuals with diamond-shaped faces.
“For a diamond-shaped face, the goal might be to balance the broader cheekbones and narrower forehead and chin.”
Cianne’s advice on sunglasses for diamond-shaped faces:
” The secret to finding the right sunglasses for diamond-shaped faces is to choose frames that create contrast. Keep in mind that it’s best not to go for frames that are too wide. It’s also best to avoid glasses that are too small or too narrow.
In both cases, your eyes will appear small and closed. Instead, opt for medium to large lenses with frames that can support them.
Round or oval lenses enhance your cheekbones. Square lenses put you at a disadvantage, as they draw attention to your forehead and make your eyes look smaller than they really are.”
As you may have noticed, the aviator-style glasses can fit every face shape.
WHAT IF MY FACE ISN’T PERFECT?
What to do when you’re embarrassed by certain features on your face?
Nobody’s perfect (which, by extension, means everybody is). We all have something we’d like to conceal or, if that’s impossible, keep out of sight. We asked Cianne Denize what her style tips were, ones she’d used in everything from Netflix series to magazine editorials.
- A big nose: “For men with big noses, wear high bridge sunglasses that emphasize the eyebrows. This will draw attention to your eyes and ears and away from your nose.”
- A large forehead: “If you’re worried about your forehead drawing all the attention, opt for a pair of aviator sunglasses. They’ll look great on most face shapes and draw attention away from a wide forehead.”
- Close-set eyes: “If your eyes are close together, wear a pair of sunglasses with transparent frames. Avoid models that are too wide, or you’ll look like you’re squinting.”
- Small face: “When you want your face to appear longer, opt for a pair of rimless sunglasses or a model with a relatively high nose bridge. These will draw attention to the outer edges of your face, in all directions.”
